“Exit 8-bit” – A Game Boy Demake of the Viral Puzzle Game Exit 8
Madsox Games reimagines the looping hallway mystery in 8-bit form, fully playable on original hardware
16 June 2025 – Indie developer Madsox Games has released Exit 8-bit, a fan-made demake of the cult 3D puzzle game Exit 8, bringing its surreal looping corridors to the iconic Nintendo Game Boy.
Built in GB Studio, Exit 8-bit preserves the mechanical soul of Exit 8 while offering a stripped-back, pixel-art experience suited to the 1990s handheld era. It runs on real Game Boy hardware and emulators, and is available now as a free download.
“Exit 8 stood out to me as a simple, powerful idea that could have existed in any era,” says Paul Maddox, founder of Madsox Games. “With Exit 8-bit, I wanted to explore how that idea would feel if written thirty years ago.”
While omitting the horror elements of the original to make the game more accessible, Exit 8-bit keeps the core gameplay intact, carefully observing subtle environmental details to find the correct exit, while embracing the visual and technical limitations of 8-bit hardware.
Key Features:
- Fully playable Game Boy demake of Exit 8
- Designed for real hardware and modern emulators
- Developed in GB Studio
- Released for free, with a video demo available
Madsox Games is known for pushing the limits of GB Studio with titles like the Death Row trilogy and Retro Handheld Simulator. With Exit 8-bit, the studio pays tribute to Exit 8 by reimagining it in a wholly different aesthetic and technological era.
